New Scalp Psoriasis Shampoo
Galderma Laboratories launched its new shampoo for psoriasis sufferers. Clobetasol propionate (Clobex Shampoo) 0.05% is available in a
4-ounce bottle to treat moderate-to-severe scalp psoriasis in patients
18 years of age and older.
Clobex Shampoo is the only super-high potency corticosteroid formulation approved by the FDA for this indication.

In two multi-center randomized clinical trials of 290 patients with moderate-to-severe scalp psoriasis, Clobex Shampoo was found to be safe and effective. Patients also rated it superior to tar-based shampoos, noting that it was less irritating and easier to apply.

High-Powered Pulsed Light Device
Palomar Medical Technologies will soon be shipping its new, high-powered StarLux Pulsed Light System. This device offers Active Contact Cooling, an Nd:YAG laser handpiece, Smooth Pulse Technology, and a variety of other features.
As the most powerful pulsed light system available, the StarLux generates fluences up to 60 J/cm2, and is useful for performing photofacials for pigmented and vascular lesions, permanent hair reduction, wrinkle reduction, and treating acne and leg veins (the latter three uses are pending FDA approval).

The StarLux uses Smooth Pulse Technology, which the company says ensures a constant, uniform beam. Also, the StarLux features an Nd:YAG laser handpiece (the Lux1064), which is useful for treating leg veins, telangiectasias, and wrinkles, for example.
Variable spot sizes are possible with the Lux1064, and it generates fluences of up to 800 J/cm2. In addition, the device employs Active Contact Cooling technology, which delivers chilled water through the StarLux handpieces to the sapphire lens.

Non-Antibiotic Acne Treatment
Sirius Laboratories introduces Nicomide-T, a new, non-antibiotic approach to topical acne management.
Both the Cream and Gel, which contain nicotinamide and nicotinic acid (components of the Vitamin B complex), target the skin’s inflammatory response to Propionibacterium acnes. The product also may help patients better tolerate retinoids and benzoyl peroxides administered together.
In a comparative multi-center study, Nicomide-T Gel demonstrated equivalent efficacy to clindamycin gel. In multi-center clinical studies involving more than 1,100 patients, more than 80% of participants who used Nicomide-T experienced clinically improved acne.
Patients who used the cream or gel didn’t experience photosensitivity, and reported side effects were mild, local and transient and subsided with continued use.
