Two New Departments Debut
Editor's Message:
Two New Departments Debut

- Larisa Hubbs, Executive Editor

This month, we bring you two new departments. “Surgical Insights”, which is authored by Joel L. Cohen, M.D., and Ranella Hirsch, M.D., is a bi-monthly department. “Issues in Dermatology”, which is coordinated by Gary Goldenberg, M.D., will run bi-monthly as well. Here’s a closer look at these departments and their respective authors.

Surgical Insights

The focus of “Surgical Insights” is to highlight a challenging surgical case — anything from a cosmetic procedure to skin cancer removal. Experts, Drs. Cohen and Hirsch, will focus on a difficult case and provide insight into the treatment issues and techniques they used in order to obtain the best outcomes.

Dr. Cohen is a board certified dermatologist with fellowship training in Mohs Micrographic dermatologic surgery and cosmetic dermatology. He is the 2005 recipient of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Public Service Award. Presently, he is the President of the Colorado Dermatologic Society and is the Chair of the ASDS Patient Eduction Committee. Dr. Cohen is in private practice at Swedish Medical Center at AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery with a practice that focuses on Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology.

Dr. Hirsch completed an internship in internal medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, residency training in dermatology at the State University of New York, and advanced laser and cosmetic dermatology training at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School. She is the Vice President of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery and is a cosmetic dermatologist and laser surgeon in private practice in Cambridge, MA.

Issues in Dermatology

This new department will explore controversial issues affecting dermatologists. Some months, these issues will be presented in a point/counterpoint format; in other months the format will be fashioned more as an editorial.
Dr. Goldenberg, Section Editor of Issues in Dermatology, is a senior resident in the Department of Dermatology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. This July he will begin a fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Colorado.
