Acne Therapy SkinMedica is launching a new benzoyl peroxide prescription product that harnesses the company’s Microsponge Delivery Technology. The new therapy, NeoBenz Micro, is formulated to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris. According to the company, the Microsponge Delivery Technology “allows for a gradual release of benzoyl peroxide over time, effectively treating acne with very low irritation.” NeoBenz Micro is the only prescription benzoyl peroxide product to use this technology. In a multi-center, randomized clinical study of 48 patients, NeoBenz Micro was shown to produce a statistically significant reduction from baseline in total, inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion counts (-30%, -40% and -22%, respectively) after 4 weeks (all p<.05). Marked improvement was noted with continual use through 12 weeks. NeoBenz Micro can also be used in combination therapy with topical retinoids or antibiotics. This product is available in three prescription strengths: 3.5%, 5.5% and 8.5% cream. Milliken & Company, a textile and chemical company, and Hill Dermaceuticals have collaborated to create DermaSmart, a collection of specially formulated garments manufactured to reduce the itching and irritation experienced by patients who have chronic skin conditions. DermaSmart is a silky, soft, breathable fabric made of 100% microfiber. The lightweight DermaSmart garments are worn under everyday clothes. Constructed with smooth flat seams, no tags and covered waistbands, DermaSmart garments help reduce the “drag” from clothing fabrics. Other features of DermaSmart include the following:• Reduced itching. DermaSmart has been proven to help reduce itching and the appearance of dryness, scaling and peeling.• Moisture management. The fabric absorbs excess perspiration and disperses it through the fabric, so that the fabric quickly dries. • Silver content. DermaSmart fabric contains silver, which naturally prevents the growth of odor-causing bacteria and keeps the fabric from retaining odors. The company’s LuxIR Fractional Infrared Handpiece delivers energy as a regular array of small beams ranging from 1.5 mm to 3 mm within the deep dermis. This delivery method creates a lattice of highly affected areas surrounded by less affected areas (see illustration of beam output). The LuxIR is FDA cleared for deep heating for pain relief, but not yet cleared for skin tightening. For more information, call (800) PALOMAR (725-6627) or visit www.palomarmedical.com.
