In dermatology, we are blessed to have many of our innovators and great teachers still among us. So that we still may gain some insight from these practitioners and learn more about them personally and professionally, this column was created. This month, we talk to Joseph L. Jorizzo, M.D.

As dermatologists we all have our individual style of practice and favorite areas of dermatology on which we prefer to focus. But we all share one thing in common: We have a strong desire to improve our skills. Getting input from colleagues can help us achieve this goal, and it is the reason for this column. Clinical Tips will highlight a wide range of pearls from practicing dermatologists — everything from a better way to perform a clinical procedure, to a more effective method for communicating with patients, to advice for improving an office function.

According to the authors, previously available sunscreens were inadequate in providing the protection needed by those of all skin types, including people of color, who are more vulnerable than was previously believed. Here they present issues related to skin cancer and photoaging and introduce the broad-spectrum photoprotection now available thanks to new photostabilization technology and the combining of organic filters that provide greatly improved UVA protection.
