Over time there has always been one constant — change. Change is something that all of us have to adapt to in all aspects of our lives. And, change can often be for the better. Our mission at Skin & Aging is to provide dermatologists, as well as dermatology residents, fellows, physician assistants and nurse practitioners, with content and information they need to adapt to changes in medicine, as well as changes in legal and professional requirements, to offer their patients the best care possible. Keeping up with these changes and improvements in the industry means adapting our editorial as ne

Assuring the quality of medical care is such a laudable goal as there is a constant pressure to do more to see quality improved. Lifetime board certification appears to be an anachronism. New trainees are already subject to time-limited certification.

In dermatology, we are fortunate to have many insightful practitioners and great teachers and mentors. Some are bright stars in our special universe — others unsung heroes. All of these colleagues have much to share from wisdom to humor to insights into dermatology and life. This column allows us to gain insight from these practitioners and learn more about them. Dr. Bercovitch was born in Montreal, Quebec, and later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he spent the most formative years of his life, and where he still has strong personal ties. He attended University of Manitoba for both college

As Dr. Van Voorhees observes in this month’s column, transitions in psoriasis treatment — as in life — often require adjustments. Here she offers her own strategies to best manage changing treatments.

Transitions in my opinion are always a challenge. At each of life’s stages, the path to the new place is often a bit rocky, even when the opportunities ahead look enticing. It has always struck me that these times can be fraught with missteps as we learn the rules, test the waters and establish our bearings. Losing one’s comfort zone is not an easy task for most of us.

Columnist Ken Beer is the Director of Cosmetic Bootcamp, which offers core specialists high level interaction and instruction at seven boutique meetings per year. There, he says, he learns more from teaching, along with fellow instructors, than from being in the audience.

This year’s Cosmetic Bootcamp was incredibly interesting and educational for me. I am always amazed at how much I learn at these meetings and find that this meeting, given its boutique nature and diverse faculty from various specialties, is the most informative. I learn more from teaching with the rest of the facult

While physicians’ costs rise, Medicare seeks to cut their compensation. Now they await with dread the threatened but still pending 21.2% decrease in the Medicare reimbursement rate. Dr. Kircik, for one, is mad and wonders if physicians should take it anymore.

What would be your employees’ reaction if you first told them you plan to cut their pay by 21.2%, then said it wouldn’t take effect until the end of the year, and then, maybe not until the end of next month and then on and on? Most likely, they would say, “You can run your own office; we’re out of here!”

    So, why can’t physi

Helping patients find the right support groups can go a long way in helping them cope with chronic conditions like psoriasis.

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, which the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) sponsors to highlight the impact psoriatic disease has on people and to address the need to find a cure.

The NPF, whose mission is “to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to eliminate their devastating effects through research, advocacy and education,” was established in October 1968. However, the organization, according to press material from the NPF, actu

Dermatologists setting up shop as a clinical trial center may see many benefits, but they also face multiple challenges.

As clinical trials expand well beyond academic centers and move increasingly into the community-practice arena, many dermatologists who’ve not performed research are being enticed to give it a try. The primary appeal is the opportunity to expand the dermatologist’s — and the practice staff’s — horizons. And in this era of declining reimbursement, some practices are eyeing the remuneration of research participation as an additional revenue source.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, immune-mediated, multi-system disease with a prevalence of approximately 1% to 3% worldwide.1 Chronic stable plaque psoriasis, or psoriasis vulgaris, is the most common form of disease, accounting for 85% to 90% of cases. Joint involvement is common, affecting anywhere from 6% to 42% of patients with psoriasis. 2 Other phenotypes include intertriginous, scalp, palmar, plantar and seborrheic, and patients may present with multiple forms. 3,4 At present, there is no curative therapy available and the clin

A retrospective study and review of the literature.

Tattoo ink treatment via Quality-switched (QS) lasers is widely considered the gold standard tattoo removal modality and is a relatively safe procedure, especially when compared to the continuous wave lasers and non-laser treatment methods used in the past. That being said, adverse side effects including undesired pigmentary alterations that occasionally occur with the use of the QS devices, while widely acknowledged among laser specialists, haven’t been clearly quantified in the medical literature. This article addresses the undesi

Study Finds Excimer Laser Effective For Generalized Psoriasis, Prompts Study Adding Clobetasol And Vitamin D Ointment
