In 2003, the United States Preventive Services Task Force concluded that there was not sufficient evidence to provide advice about counseling to prevent skin cancer. Now, an updated recommendation from the USPSTF states that children, adolescents and young adults ages 10 to 24 should be counseled about how to minimize their risk of skin cancer, using an approach that focuses on the negative aesthetic aspects of tanning and excess sun exposure.

Since the enactment of the 10% tax on indoor tanning last July, the topic continues to be of significant interest. Many developments occurred in October, including new legislation in California and the publication of new research. In particular, researchers at Harvard Medical School have demonstrated a definitive link between tanning and an increased risk for skin cancer with the results of a 20-year study. A report from the IRS also shows that the tanning tax may not be as effective as expected.

Skin Scan, a consumer dermatology app, allows patients to take a picture of a mole and uses a mathematical algorithm to judge the potential danger of the mole. While consumer healthcare apps are designed to make patients more aware of health concerns and get them more involved in their own healthcare, the apps can also cause problems for patients who do not use them correctly or rely too heavily on advice generated from the app, dermatologists warn.
